The EU's Carbon Tax (CBAM) has entered its payment phase from January 2026, and some of our members are fearing their shipments may be held at European ports.

Members have also shared that European buyers are demanding carbon data, and orders may be lost if exports, direct as well as indirect, do not comply.

The EU's Carbon Tax (CBAM) payment phase began in January 2026. Today CBAM covers steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, electricity, and hydrogen- including metal articles like fasteners. 
 
From January 2028, it is set to swallow the engineering goods basket- auto components, machinery, appliances- under the 180-product downstream extension already agreed by the EU Council.
 
Textiles and garments are outside CBAM for now, though they face separate EU sustainability regulations.
 
Therefore, No MSME should think CBAM is someone else's problem because the perimeter is expanding every year.
 
The sword is hanging over engineering goods line with a hard date: 1 January 2028.

IamSMEofIndia is gathering ground-level evidence to present to the Government and Policy Makers, so MSMEs get urgent support, including the proposed 90% compliance-cost coverage scheme.

Even if you don't export to Europe, please respond. CBAM demands are travelling down the supply chain to suppliers of suppliers.
